The history books say that the first inhabitants in this region came because of the enchanting turquoise waters. They left behind pictorial symbols and traces of their religious beliefs in caves that scientists have been unable to decipher to this day. In the second half of the 19th century investors bought property along the peninsula, some developing large farm estates. One of these estates was called Varadero which gave its name to what has become today the tourist capital of Cuba.

Varadero offers many activities such as biking, water-skiing, tours by yacht and helicopter, surfing, kayaking, sailing and golf. Varadero's exquisite food, night life, fresh and healthy air, and most of all its clean, transparent, blue-green waters make it very popular for visitors the world over. There are more than ten virgin islets in the area along shores that are an ideal home for the spiny lobster, marine shrimp, crabs and 70 kinds of mollusks.

Only 45 minutes from the Marina Dársena is Cayo Libertad, a recreational area boasting fresh seafood, a pristine beach and snorkeling. You can also take a ride on the glass-bottomed vessel Nautilis to see the beautiful reef and seabed.

The Varadero Golf Club is an 18-hole, world-class championship course with spectacular views of the ocean from fairways and greens on dunes bordering the beach. Water hazards connect with the sea, and numerous sand traps make the course a real challenge.
