The Montemar National Park is similar to the Florida Everglades. It has an abundance of birds including most of those endemic to Cuba, in addition to many that migrate from the north during winter. It has many tourist attractions and is one of Cuba’s main zones for ecological and industrial tours.
A special attraction for the diver here are the on-shore water holes, not far from the sea, known as Cenotes. These are in fact the lake-like openings of flooded limestone caverns, part of a speleo-lacustrine system connected through flooded tunnels to the sea and extending some 42 miles (70 km) along the coast.
The salt water in these caves, some of which reach 70 meters in depth, is crystal-clear and contains many colorful tropical fish as well as several blind species that never leave the caves. For experienced divers it is possible to enter a Cenote and follow the caves to the open sea.
Attractions are the warm transparent waters with visibility of 35 to 50 meters (135 to 200 feet) many varieties of corals, gorgonians, and sponges. There is also an abrupt wall dropping 70-80 meters (200 to 300 feet).
