To imagine the Santa Isabel hotel, one must return to the 19th century, to the "Villa San Cristóbal de La Habana." Think about horse-drawn carriages with beautiful señoras in airy dresses, draped in colorful handkerchiefs. There, in one of the magical residences on the Plaza de Armas, is the ancient palace of the Count and Countess of Santovenia, converted into the Santa Isabel hotel in 1867 by U.S. trader Luis Lay.
Walking through its hallways is like immersing oneself in museum-worthy décor, including valuable lamps, vases, sculpture and paintings. The Santa Isabel does not apologize for not having a swimming pool or gymnasium, because the beauty and elegance of its plant-filled interior patio is more therapeutic than several hours on any treadmill.
The rooms are thick with history and well-conserved, offering a robust flashback to days of bustling dresses, agile steps of servants and stories told by travelers from afar.

Two floors totaling 27 rooms, 10 of which are suites (Standard, Junior and 1 Special). It has the comfort of a 5-star plus, with colonial decoration and personalized service. The special Santovenia suite is said to have been the personal room of the Count of Santovenia, and it currently has a delightful king-sized canopy bed.
The rest of the rooms have:
  • Air conditioning
  • Private bath with tub
  • Satellite TV
  • Safe deposit box

Dining and Bars

El Condado
  • El Globo (the balloon) cafeteria is outside the hotel, its name from days gone by when it was a balloon launch. The spot now is a wonderful place to get drinks invented by the bartenders, including the Santa Isabel, made with whipped coconut, blue curacao and lemon. Their exquisite Obispo cocktail is concocted with white rum, orange juice and grenadine, and there are many Cuban classics: Mojito, Daiquiri, Havana Special, Cubanito, Cuba libre and Cuba Bella. Its light food menu includes ham, cheese and vegetable sandwiches, tuna, chicken and hot or iced tea.
  • The El Condado restaurant is another fine surprise, and in addition to their habitual international menu, they offer 17 different varieties of traditional Spanish cooking. Some are so ancient that many of today’s Spaniards don’t even remember them! The house specialty is a superb Cuban chicken dish called Pollo Mayombe.
Snack Bar
The Santovenia Snack Bar has both a food and drink menu, and the chef suggests the orange-garlic pork, roasted ham with mango sauce, or tortilla a la Habanera.
